We kicked off the Georgia tour in the colonial capital of Georgia - Chatham County’s finest… the one and only….. Savannah GA!

We had a phenomonal time in Greenville, SC. The beginning of the tour is always the most stressful, and since we changed the show around a little bit… we were anxious to see the reactions. Greenville loved it. And we are sure Savannah will too.

We are especially thrilled to be spending Valentines Day in such a scenic, historical, and romantic city. What better way to start the day of love, than with us? We even have our very own cupid - ready to entertain. And though he comes with four legs, instead of two… and there are no arrows — we think he’s pretty handsome…

Surrounding cities should also consider spending Valentine’s Day with us. Go get some dinner, then join us for dessert as we rock the big top in “Georgia’s First City,” Savannah Georgia.

If you've been to the show you might have noticed that the young men who perform with Onionhead the Clown in our Pizza Posse act are also from our comedy trapeze group. Many of the people who are part of the cast and crew of the UniverSoul Circus are multi-talented.

Wandi, Lucky and Soviso, the Pizza Posse crew, are also dynamic acrobats. Lucky (not seen in this photo but you can see him in previous blogs) first came to the UniverSoul Circus as a contortionist. They are all originally from South Africa.

But he had us all laughing when our gospel mimes, Lewyn and Summer, painted his face and he dubbed himself "Larry the Cable Mime."

Tonight we open in Norfolk, Virginia but Norfolk residents might have seen us all over town this morning.

UniverSoul Circus favorite Zeke and our contortionists "Twisted Soul" appeared live WVEC-TV (ABC) during the 12pm newscast. Another group of performers got a chance to visit with the kids at Sprately Middle School and also performed for the residents of the Lucas Lodge Adult Day Care. There was also a wonderful story in the Virginian-Pilot today!

We love this shot of aerialist Beatrice Martins just having fun before performing live on WTTG-TV, the FOX affiliate in Washington, DC. Bea (as we call her) and her partner Ebon Greyman were featured during the morning tv segment earlier this week with Zeke and animal trainer Andre McClain. Bea and Ebon are very serious during their act but they both are a lot of fun.

Yesterday was our Ringmaster Tony Tone's birthday and the cast and crew of the UniverSoul Circus surprised him with a cake at the end of the show.

The cake was in the shape of the Dallas Cowboys logo since Tony Tone is a major fan of the team. Unfortunately the Redskin fans in the house weren't too happy when Tone asked if there were any "Cowboy fans in the house." You can tell by Zeke's reaction below that all they could do was laugh when the majority of the house let out a collective boo, but Tony says a few Cowboy fans made their presence known.

The NG Gospel Mimes, Lewyn Brown and Summer Golden, are right in front of you prior to their performance. Let us know if you noticed them. The photo below is a hint. By the way, the "NG" stands for "Naturally Gifted" and they are originally from Detroit, MI.

Last night was a trip...were you there?

DC, Zeke and I had a great time with you all last night at the evening performance. If you were there we really want to hear from you. Tell us your favorite part. Here are some of our highlights:

During our friends and family shout-outs we met up with this little girl who said she lived on "Alabama Avenue" when we asked her where she was from. A few minutes later a little boy told us he was from "the United States of America."

"Platinum Lovers" was incredible too. First of all we had a good time with this man who was representing the "old school." He said his name was "Truck." Truck didn't know any of the words and all I could do was channel Fred Sanford and get on him for not knowing a classic "big dummy." LOL

These two who represented the "new school" in Platinum Lovers didn't even know each other but they put it down and had fun. Who knows??? A love connection maybe?

The best part of the night was meeting everyone who stayed for our autograph session at the end of the show. Make sure you bring your program books and let us know who you are the next time you are at the show and feel free to post a comment about your experience below.

Lucky twice in one night

I was surprised to hear that one of the girls in our Kids Big Top Dance Contest tonight was named Lucky. I know some people might have misinterpreted my reaction but we also have a Lucky in the UniverSoul Circus family and it is a name you don't hear too much wouldn't you agree? Our Lucky is one of the "Mysterious Brothers" as well as one of our show deejays.

Oprah may have her "Favorite Things" but we have our own favorite things too! Check out this adorable stuffed Zebra available in the concessions area. We give kudos to USC Executive Cynthia Walker who runs all of the concessions and selected this cute and soft stuffed Zebra. The real Zebras are in our all new act "Noah's Ark" featuring Andre McClain.

Did you even know Zebras could be trained? Let alone camels and llamas! Below is a shot of the real Zebras from the show just yesterday. Did you see the act? What did you think?

Zeke calls this the "circus meltdown"

Today in the "Big Top Kids Dance Contest" I think little Sherry realized that hundreds of people were staring at her and she had a little meltdown. Poor thing didn't even start dancing. I tried to comfort her but she was ready to go! Did you see her?

After she left the ring I saw that our Audio Engineer Pete gave her one of his personal stuffed elephants that they sell in the concessions stand. We hope that helped Sherry!

Russ Parr got ya'll good

Nationally syndicated radio show personality Russ Parr played an incredible joke at the opening in DC last night. He said his crew placed a bunch of free gas cards under one of the seats!

The ENTIRE packed house practically had their heads under their chairs when Russ says, "Oh wait, that's tomorrow night." Everyone then let out a big groan! Were you there? Did you fall for it?

He had the entire UniverSoul Circus staff, Tony Tone and Zeke fooled!! You might see the prank on his show on TV One.

You met our House Manager Lilliana Rodriguez (left) in an earlier blog but we wanted everyone to meet our Talent Manager Hermione (pronounced Her-me-on) White also known as Ms. White.

Hermione's job is incredibly busy but her first duty is to make sure that the performers are at the show on time! You also might see her with our Guest Ringmasters during the show because she lets them know when they are going to enter the ring. Prior to the show she is backstage each night keeping Tony Tone and Zeke informed about the guest or any special events for the night.

Hermione also alerts the talent of any special promotions including radio broadcasts, press interviews and community appearances. So much more involved so if you see her around the tent feel free to ask her about her interesting job.

Newark gives a warm welcome to UniverSoul and their Mayor Corey Booker

Our opening in Newark, NJ last night was spectacular. The Newark crowd packed the tent and showed their love to Tony Tone, Zeke and all the cast. We were also thrilled to have Newark Mayor Corey Booker in the house who came into the ring, greeted the crowd and graciously accepted a plaque presented by our local promoter Jeneene Butler for his support of multi-cultural events like ours. But what touched us about the Mayor was the time he took to greet members of the hometown crowd during intermission. Check out the video footage.

If you are close to Newark come check us out. Our last day in the tri-state area is this Sunday, May 11 and then we are off to Washington, DC for a three week run starting May 14.

Who's that guy in the tux?

When you are at the circus you might see this guy standing in a tux right where the talent enters the ring or you might see him signaling the deejay in the audio booth. That's our stage manager Fernando España.

Fernando is responsible for making sure the show starts on time as well as making sure the acts get in and out of the ring. He's also responsible for the props and the rigging of the aerial acts and trapeze act. He's been with UniverSoul for five years now.

So the next time you are at the show, make sure you tell Fernando hello!

LL Cool J & NY State Senator Malcolm Smith rocked the house!

We had an exciting day with NY State Senator Malcolm Smith & entertainer and author LL Cool J who we honored for their outstanding community service work for creating the Queens based "Jump and Ball" Tournament.

The crowd went wild when they both came into the ring and LL even brought his two beautiful daughters. Both men offered encouraging words and were delighted to receive the plaques we bestowed on them.

Tomorrow in Queens we are honoring entertainer and author LL Cool J and NY State Senator Malcolm Smith. They are going be in the house at the 4:30pm show and everyone at the circus is very excited because they are all huge LL fans.

LL and the Senator gave back to the Queens community by starting the "Jump and Ball Tournament" that takes place every summer and we want to continue our tradition of recognizing the achievements of individuals in the communities where we set up the Big Top!

The NY Post's blog "Tempo Espresso" ran a great story about the Rodriquez Family- Danny Rodriguez our Operations Manager, his wife Lilliana our House Manager and their 12-year-old daughter Alia.

One Happy-Family To Go

Traveling around the world with a couple hundred people who are into clowning around, dozens of wild animals and a few truckloads of equipment may seem like mayhem to you, but for the Rodriguez Family, it’s life. Danny Rodriguez, who has been the operations manager at the UniverSoul Circus for nearly six years, along with his wife and the circus’ House Manager Lilianna and their daughter Alia, spend most of the year on the road with the circus.

Q: What led you to get involved with the circus?

Danny: I’m a fifth generation circus kid, so it’s in my blood. I started out as performer. Both my mother and father were performers. I was born on the road, while my parents were traveling to do a show. You are either born to do this work or you’re not. Our oldest daughter, America, was not born to do this. She hates the traveling and decided to go to school in Sarasota, Florida.

Lilianna: I’m like him, but I’m seventh generation and I was born and raised in Mexico. I moved to the states when I was 6. We met in the circus, I was a performer, doing floor work and he was into the trapeze and aerialist. I didn’t like him at first, but it’s funny that, that is usually who you end up with.

Q: Why did you continue the tradition of joining the circus, instead of getting a typical 9-to-5 job?

You can do what you do and look at it as a job; I don’t because I love what I do. This life isn’t for everybody. You know, the traveling, every week you’re in a different city. It can drain you, but I love it. I really couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

Lilianna: It’s fun. You see a lot of different cities and great things. But, it’s still a job. You have to be responsible and stay on top of what you’re doing.

Q: Do you plan to perform with the circus, someday?

Alia: Yes, I love the circus so much. I love meeting people and [having] new experiences. I practice a lot. If I am not in school with the other performers, I am practicing. I want to be really good because a lot of my family members are still performing.

Q: How does your family get around?

Danny: We have an R-V that we live in on-site, during the tour. It pretty much has all the comforts of home, washer, dryer, microwave, flat-screen TV, refrigerator—everything you could want. It’s our home away from home.

Q: How do you spend your downtime?

We try to spend as much time together, as possible. It’s really difficult because my wife is the House Manager. She has shows and dealing with the crowds. We make sure to do something, maybe go out to dinner, catch a movie, or even sit down together and watch the King of Queens. It’s hard to do, but you have to make that time. In the two months that I have off, we take a vacation, usually a cruise, with no phones, computers or contact from the outside world—it’s just us.

We thought you might be interested in a glimpse of the day in the life of our CEO Cedric Walker. You read in our last post that he flew into New York from Atlanta to interview with Steve Harvey. After the interview he went to Prospect Park in Brooklyn to the circus site to check up on things. After 15 years he says it is still exciting for him since the circus was just an idea many years ago but now it is a reality.

He shares some of his thoughts (and a laugh) about the show with Talent/Production manager Deneise Howard.

He continues on through the evening with meetings. We can barely keep up.

Steve Harvey hooked us up today

Our CEO Cedric Walker flew in from Atlanta to New York join the Steve Harvey Morning show at the WBLS studios for an interview about the circus and it was fantastic. We caught this photo of Steve and Mr. Walker above in the studio.

Steve and his crew gave major props to the circus and Steve even asked all of their listeners to log onto the UniverSoul Circus website www.universoulcircus.com and buy tickets. What was interesting was that Steve and Mr. Walker had not officially met so it was a historic moment.

Mr. Walker and UniverSoul Circus Market Manager Tony Starling also got a chance to catch up with some of their friends at WBLS. Mr. Walker has had a long relationship with the folks at WBLS as he was one of the biggest music promoters in the country before he started UniverSoul Circus. Here he is with Gloria Sims the Account Manager for the UniverSoul Circus.

During the interview Mr. Walker sat by comedian/actor Anthony Anderson who was also a guest on the show. Mr. Walker told us later that he is big fan of Anthony's!

On the way out of the studio Mr. Walker got a chance to also chat with Steve's manager Rushion McDonald.

And the Winner is.....Dariel Joseph

On Saturday night 9-year-old Dariel Joseph, the winner of our Brooklyn UniverSoul Circus "Kid Search Contest," made his debut!

Check out the highlight reel from his performance. You can also and catch a peak at the runner-up Nadia Earle who was sitting in the audience with her mom.

Prior to the performance, Dariel was able to prepare for his act with one of our performers, Lucky Malatsi, who started with UniverSoul Circus when he was Dariel's age. Here they are in the ring just before the audience came into the tent.

After rehearsal Dariel joined his family in the audience to watch the show. You can't see them in this shot but there were also 20 other friends and family in the house to cheer him on.

Just before Dariel went onstage, he and Lucky went over the routine one more time.

Dariel also got to join all the performers for the final curtain call. Here he is joking around with our Talent and Production Manager Deneise Howard and Lucky just before Ringmaster Tony Tone called him in the ring.

Dariel took pictures with the cast and even some audience members asked him for his autograph! We are so proud of Dariel and we consider him an official member of the UniverSoul Circus family.

We also want to thank our runner-up Nadia Earle and her mom Fatimah for entering. We know she is going places too!

Our favorite NYC "Soul Train Line" and "Platinum Lovers" of the week

Our first week in New York at Prospect Park was incredible and we truly believe the adults are having more fun than the kids.

If you haven't seen our show yet you have to understand that it is a mandate that the audience be involved in the show and the "Soul Train Line" is strictly for the old school. Now if you are coming to the show with your significant other and you decide to come in the ring for the "Platinum Lovers" spot you better bring it because Tony Tone will call you out.

The UniverSoul Circus was featured on the New York morning show "Good Day New York."

Before the shoot our aerialist Beatrice Martins joined stage manager Fernando España for breakfast.

The Fox crew were thrilled by our Elephants the "Soul Circus Divas."

Then reporter Vanessa Alfano gets ready to get into the act with our other aerialist Ebon Greyman a New York native.

Afterwards Ebon and Vanessa discuss her circus debut.

Welcome to our brand new blog UniverSoul Life! I'm Paula Witt, the publicist for the UniverSoul Circus and I'll be giving you a behind the scenes look at life at the UniverSoul Circus.

This is a photo of me right before one of our shows in the circus' hometown, Atlanta, GA.

We just finished an exciting run that included community appearances by our performers, a string of sold-out shows, live performances on WAGA-TV "Good Day Atlanta" and exciting performances by gospel star Canton Jones and rap legends Whodini. We are currently in Greenville, SC and will be headed to Raleigh, NC (March 12-March 16), Richmond, VA (March 19-March 23) and then New York City with Brooklyn (March 26-April 13), Queens (April 15-April 27) and the Bronx (April 29-May 4). There are so many people who work with the UniverSoul Circus.

This blog will allow us to share some of the spontaneous and sometimes bizarre behind the scenes happenings that take place during the show. But most importantly, we want you to be a part of UniverSoul Life!
